Tell me a story…

…but don’t tell me you’re telling it.
Videogames tell us stories. They range from the simplistic to the utterly convoluted. Not every game strives to tell an epic tale, and some obviously do a better job than others.
Almost as important as what a story entails, though, is how exactly the game goes about presenting it. Participation is key.

Gabe Newell: Keeping DirectX Vista only was a mistake.

Gabe Newell, (Half Life and Valve), says the consoles don’t support DX10 and by locking out XP the install base is so low that developers don’t use it. This decision affected the whole industry. Games for Windows initiative — pushing devs to make all their games for Xbox, where MS collects the licensing fee.

A Pac-Man game that electrocutes you

Researchers at the University College London’s Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging have hacked up a game for “research purposes” that may recall fond memories of the nuclear war video game scene in the Bond movie Never Say Never Again. The Pac-Man-like game the researchers designed shocks players when they’re caught by the enemy.
